Early Phase Implementation
METROFOOD-EPI (GA 101130162) is the Horizon Europe funded project supporting the Early Phase Implementation of METROFOOD-RI.
The overarching mission of METROFOOD-EPI is to advance the building process of METROFOOD-RI as infrastructure consolidated for its full implementation and ensure an effective start of the operational phase.
This new phase of METROFOOD-RI comes at a time when consumers worldwide are increasingly focused on the quality, safety, and authenticity of food. In this context, the availability of high-quality and reliable data on agri-food production, as well as technologies to promote and demonstrate the quality, safety, and traceability of raw materials and products, is of fundamental importance to protect the interests of both consumers and producers. METROFOOD-RI fits into this context, providing its users (researchers, policymakers, inspection and control agencies, agrifood industry companies, consumers, and citizens) with a range of services, offering access to state-of-the-art laboratories, facilities, and experimental structures. It promotes standardization and harmonization of measurements, sharing, integrating, and making knowledge and data interoperable in support of agrifood systems (e.g., food composition, quality, safety, authenticity, traceability, sustainability, and circular bioeconomy).
The concept of METROFOOD-EPI builds on 4 Action layers (Al), covering respectively:
- Al1 - Consolidation of countries engagement in METROFOOD ERIC, towards the full implementation
- Al2 - Strengthening of the technical organisation and implementation of the RI for its full operational phase
- Al3 - Consolidation of the RI’s positioning in the agrifood research & innovation landscape, including update of the scientific strategy and contribution to the ERA, community building, and liaison with other initiatives ensuring synergies with existing RIs in the agrifood sector across Europe
- Al4 - Long-term scientific & financial sustainability, including impact, risk management and user engagement.
