We would like to draw your attention to a survey launched by FAO in the context of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF). The survey exclusively targets family farmers and small-scale producers, and aims to better understand the effects of COVID-19 they have experienced, as well as their crisis and post-crisis recovery strategies. It is part of a broader consultation process, and the information collected will form the basis for discussions and actions to support farmers in the context of the COVID-19 crisis. With this message we kindly ask you to help us disseminate this survey in order to reach as many family farmers as possible, and to ensure that their different realities are adequately captured in this data collection exercise. We would therefore very much appreciate if you could extend this invitation to any small-scale producer or organization you may know. Background informationIn the context of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF), FAO has launched a survey to better understand the impacts of COVID-19 on family farmers, as well as farmers’ crisis and post-crisis recovery strategies. This survey, which is the first of its kind, is part of a broader consultation process on family farmers’ challenges and solutions in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be launched again in a few months and will become a tool to continue monitoring the situation of family farmers on a constant basis. The information collected will be analyzed and form the basis for discussions and capacity building related to mitigation actions and solutions, considering family farmers’ different realities. The UNDFF provides a comprehensive framework for analysis and can accelerate collective and coherent action to support family farmers, who are key agents of sustainable development. Furthermore, the consultation process will contribute to Pillar 4 of the Global Action Plan of the UNDFF: “Strengthen family farmers’ organizations and capacities to generate knowledge, represent farmers and provide inclusive services in the urban-rural continuum”. It will provide policy makers and other relevant actors with structured data and knowledge to inform policy making processes. FAO will also share the consolidated results of the consultation process with participants, while country and region-specific information will be made available as well. Specifically, the consultation process aims to: contribute to a permanent channel of knowledge exchange between family farmers’ organizations (FFOs) and other development actors on practical and collective responses of family farmers to the COVID-19 crisis;gather and disseminate information on good practices proposed by FFOs to support governmental responses on how to mitigate the impact of the crisis and handle the rehabilitation phase, and gather and disseminate information on good practices proposed by FFOs, also to strengthen their support to their own members. The consultation will be carried out with three different tools: a survey to collect data on the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on family farmers’ production activities and livelihoods;a survey to gather information on FFOs’ challenges and solutions in the context of COVID-19, and an online discussion to exchange knowledge between different development actors (governments, research institutions, family farmers and their organizations, civil society organizations, etc.) related to mitigation actions and long-term recovery strategies. This survey, the first of step of this consultation process, should take about 30 minutes to complete. Please be assured that all information you provide will be kept confidential.
